Make Music Your Career

Where I Come From

My earliest memories of recording sound was as a young imaginative kid with this thing, the Yak Bak. a fun little device that lets you record your voice and play it back. But I would play parts of my favorite songs when the singer wasn’t singing pretend I was in the band and record my self singing over the music.

In the time between then and now, I learned to play various instruments including piano, guitar, double bass, French horn, and trombone. In high school, I became a working DJ with a friend and we would DJ corporate events and school dances across southern Ontario. Being a DJ, I started to learn basic signal flow and how to connect audio equipment, as well as the differences between voltage, ohms, watts, and decibels.

As I became more and more interested in music production and audio engineering, I came across an early, stripped-down trial version of Pro Tools and downloaded it. I had no idea what to do with it at first, but I experimented with it for days, plugging everything into itself in every combination possible. Eventually, I was able to record music from a CD playing on my Gemini CD player into Pro Tools through a cheap built-in interface card on the back of my computer.

My First Setup

I eventually went on to graduate from the trial I had downloaded and bought a production package put together by my local music store. It included:

  • A full version of Pro Tools LE (Digidesigns “Injector Pack” of plugins and software)
  • The classic blue Digidesign 2 channel interface
  • A 25 key audio MIDI controller
  • A Pair of M-Audio powered monitors
  • M-Audio Nova. A large diaphragm condenser mic

Everything I needed to make hit records.

After years of learning to produce music on my own, I enrolled in Trebas Institute’s Production and Recording Techniques program. I graduated at the top of my class and landed an internship at one of Canada’s longest running commercial recording studios, Phase One. I met and learned from the best in the industry during my time there. After a 9-month internship, I heard that another premier recording studio, Mushroom Studios, had moved from Vancouver to Toronto. I contacted Mushroom to inquire about job opportunities and, as luck would have it, they had just had a staff engineer leave and had a booking for an upcoming Toronto act to record a full album. I spent a few days with Mushroom’s owner and, right before the session started, I was offered a job as a staff engineer. That album, “Warring” by The Dacrys, went on to be nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the Junos, but ultimately lost to The Arcade Fire.

Sadly, Mushroom eventually closed and I found myself producing commercials, promos and station imaging for radio. I started to work with a cluster of 7 radio stations producing anything pre-recorded. One of those stations is the number 1 station for contemporary country across the greater Toronto area, KX Country.

During this time, I started freelancing as a radio producer working with many client’s in Canada and the US. As a radio producer an advertising campaign I produced went on to be nominated for a Crystal award.

in 2017, I started Micme.com, an online podcast production company helping businesses and entrepreneurs start and maintain their podcasts.
