Software and Equipment

Analog warmth at a fraction of the cost

Mixing and mastering “in the box” has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the advancements in technology and the convenience and how much time you can save by being able instantly recall any mix, any time, immediately, even if it was done years ago.

Software

Advancements in analog sampling technology has allowed for faithful recreations of the most renowned analog equipment, at a fraction of the cost. Mixing and mastering engineers can now achieve world class, sonically commercial standards without having to go to an expensive recording studio, that has limited equipment available.

Here’s the software I use to polish your music and make it sound like a record. ready for radio and streaming.

Plugins: Warmth, Tone and Depth

Erin Stereo Tube Equalizer: An exact replica of the EAR 825Q Tube EQ. ULTRAGAIN matching technology, ensures exceptionally precise gain mapping on all bands and delivers superb resolution, consistency, and responsiveness while maintaining the hardware’s original behavior and character.

Erin Mid EQ: Intended for mid-range, it is an accurate recreation of a UK-made tube unit similar to Pultec-style designs.

Erin Comp: A stereo tube compressor/limiter derived from the EAR 660 Fairchild type valve limiter/compressor. It has a dynamic action with a euphonically transparent “knee” of the attack/decay envelope and a well tuned behavior around it.

Erin ‘Hyper’ Stereo Comp: The “Hyper” tube compressor/limiter has 4 new, very effective “hyper” compressor emulations that provide quicker, more precise compression while using less CPU.

El Rey: Accurately based on the renowned RCA BA-6A Limiting Amplifier.

Blond: Incredibly rare vintage units crafted in Italy up to six decades ago.

These units have gained a stellar reputation in the professional audio industry over time and achieved a status of being highly sought-after. Despite their scarcity and obscurity, these provide unique sonic possibilities that are unavailable elsewhere, and I utilize them to enhance the quality of your mixes.

How Blond adds beautiful tonal textures to your music:

  • Blond EQ (Features two switchable 4-Band Equalizers with High-pass and Low-pass Filters, encompassing 24 Line and Mic Preamps, resulting in a total of 48 preamp emulations).
  • Blond Pre Mixer (Includes five switchable Equalizers, 18 Line preamps, and six Custom preamps meticulously sampled from a 1958 tube unit, offering a total of 24 preamp emulations).
  • Blond Pre (Incorporates all preamp models, except for the five Blond Comp preamps, along with two additional line preamps from Blond EQ B, providing a sumptuous selection of 74 preamplifiers to choose from).
  • Blond Comp (Comprises five distinct dynamics processors, such as two FET compressors, an optical compressor, and a custom tube compressor and limiter that we have fine-tuned, enabling tracks to dynamically come alive through your speakers).

Taupe: 21 tape machines, both analog and digital, were meticulously sampled around Europe. 40 expertly designed programs, three consoles, two compressors, a separate MIX control, true harmonic saturation, and more. Taupe was created after more than 10,000 minutes of sample time. This plugin goes beyond the standard analog tape simulation.

TAUPE TAPE (3U tape rack unit)

TAUPE EQ (3U rack juicy EQ section)

TAUPE COMP (Single rack unit compressor/limiter)

Frost Channel Strip: ‘British-style’ channel strip, providing all the basic processing – equalisation (static and dynamic), compression, pre-amplification, saturation and a clipper.

Black Guru: Re-create in the digital domain that warm and tone rich feeling that an analog setup is capable of delivering. Emulating the pre-amps from two cherished modern dynamic processors made in the UK: a 2254 reissue and a modern 33609. Used first on every channel to re-create working on a vintage mixing console.

Chandler Zener-limiter: The Zener Limiter plug-in is a flexible, cutting-edge limiter and compressor that maintains loyal to its renowned sonic heritage. It was named by Chandler Limited’s Wade Goeke and is a genuine replication of its forebearer.

Analog Design Black Box HG2: The emulation of sweet tubes and creamy-sounding transformers not only make tracks sound richer and fuller, they also make them sound louder, bigger and punchier at the same peak level.

SSL Bus Compressor 2: The center section compressor from SSL’s G Series analogue console from the 1980s. A straightforward compressor with a straightforward goal: to give full mixes a louder, punchier, more energetic sound. Without sacrificing clarity, it gives your mix cohesiveness and power.

SSL X-Saturator: an emulation of an analogue circuit that introduces either 2nd order valve style or 3rd order transistor style distortion or a blend of the two. Gives a nice vintage sound from the 50s through to the 70s.

Purple MC77: the 1176 is one of the most iconic limiters of all time for good reason. The MC77 has the same unrivaled tone and lightning-fast response as the original 1176.

Amek 200: Based on the first parametric equalizers that started it all, the AMEK EQ 200 is a beautifully transparent plugin EQ, inspired by the classic sound of icons like the GML 8200 and vintage SONTEC EQs.

Monitoring

Topping DX3 Pro DAC/Amp:

  • DAC – AKM AK4493EQ (-113dB THD+N, 126dB Dynamic Range, DSD512, 32bit/768k)
  • AMP – TPA6120A2 (SNR of 128dB A-Weighted, THD of 112.5dB)

This offers astounding dynamics across the entire audio spectrum, specifically bass. Exemplary linearity in the high-end and always controlled, even at high volumes. The experience of listening to the best loudspeakers on the market will make the user completely forget that Clear are even there.

Avantone Mix Cube:

  • Designed to replicate the wide range of “bass-challenged” devices such as car stereos, TVs, clock radios, computers, Bluetooth devices, etc.
  • A single monitor, connected in mono to ensure compatibility on listening systems that use only one speaker like some phones and TVs and for systems that playback in mono like in nightclubs, retail stores and restaurants, etc.
